The Road to victory Recap: (Credit to Kirk Knutson,
the Captain of the victorious)
The Praetorian Kierkegaard
played all five teams en route to claiming the second annual Dictator’s Cup.
The Gaard got off to a slow start in pool play, dropping their first game 2-0
to Mike’s Marauders, giving the Marauders an arguable claim to the title of
People’s Champion.
The Gaard stepped it up in
their next pool play game, besting last year’s winner The Guillotines by a
score of 5-2. Paving the way to victory was a hat trick from Dane Bremer, whose
jetliner-sized fuel tank was on display all weekend.
In a first-to-worst
scenario, defending champion The Guillotines would go on to lose The Dumpster
Championship, ‘beheading’ captain Guillaume Paugum off of next year’s draft
table and onto the draft board.
With the number two seed
in Pool A, The Gaard started the knockout round with a 6-2 victory over
3rd-seeded Barrie’s Inferno. Next up was the formidable Genghis Kahn’s Army,
the fearsome opponent marshalled by The Dictator herself (aka Sheila Cheng).
Khan’s Army controlled the battlefield, but the stalwart and agile Mike Miller
repeatedly shut the door with a number of brilliant saves. Late in the game,
tournament MVP Justus Foss went five hole on the power play, and Miller’s
shutout allowed The Gaard to hang on for a 1-0 victory and advance to the
Championship game.
Advancing through the
other end of the bracket were the hard-shooting Average Joes, who won the other
semifinal game when ALL CAPS Tommy Mac scored from center ice off the
overtime-starting faceoff. The Gaard jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but The
Average Joes turned the tables with a momentum-shifting goal and took a 3-2
lead early in the second period. Foss delivered some late game heroics with
both a game-tying goal and the game winner, leading The Gaard to a
back-and-forth 4-3 victory and the title.
Joe McArdle (Captain of
The Average Joes) has his own recap of the game, which can be read on the Facebook Page
as well!
