The semi-final’s and finals of the 7th Annual Midwest Broomball Invitational had all you wanted out of bracket play: 1-score games, overtime, an 11 player shootout, and a never-seen-before (at least by the host) 2 v 2 OT instant classic!
Championship Bracket Summary:
Indiana Invaders win their 2nd consecutive Midwest Broomball tournament!
The first semi-final of the day featured the Minnesota crew compiled of various squads (Homegrown 280) vs the 2-time Champion Dayton Bombers. This game was one for the ages and a battery malfunction on the recording device kept the memory of this legendary 2 v 2 OT period only in the minds of the spectators there watching it! The Bombers had a 2-1 lead in the closing minutes but Homegrown came way too far to let this game be their last. With less than a minute, and 2 players each in the penalty box, Homegrown snuck one in to force OT. Since OT is 4 v 4 with no goalie, that left both teams with only 2 eligible on-ice players and it didn’t take long for the Homegrown crew to put the Blue Ox ball into the back of the net. The other semi-final showcased another close 1-goal game that we have witnessed multiple times throughout the years as the Indiana Invaders held on to beat the D.C. Legislators 1-0 in another epic battle between the two squads.
The championship game could not have started any better when the Invaders came out with some high intensity as Greg Thomas planted the ball on the post in the opening minutes. The invaders used that jump-start to go on to lead at halftime 2-0. Homegrown re-grouped and essentially controlled the ball ll most of the 2nd half as they were able to work that pass in to the far post to make it 2-1 halfway through the 2nd period. With 5-minutes to go the rink staff tried opening the doors to bring out the zamboni but the Homegrown goalie denied them the opportunity. In the closing 2 minutes, Homegrown was putting on some serious pressure, firing the ball in from all angles, but the Invader defense held their ground. In the closing seconds, the Invader goalie Tyler Saben, made the save of his life as the ball was in and out of the crease numerous times, but he was able to snag it up for the surprising Invader win.
Lower Bracket Summary:
Brooms of Steel (PA) wins the inaugural Lower Bracket Championship!
The day started off with a mostly regional team (Wicked Sisters) vs a mostly local squad (Columbus Yetis) as they had an overtime classic in which the Wicked Sister’s goalie, undressed for the OT play and entered the game only to score the game winning goal. The magic ended for the Sisters when they ran up against the Brooms of Steel in the semi-final and dropped a close one 1-0. The other semi-final showcased a very stingy defense by the Cleveland BC but the Derek Wolf defensive wall was not strong enough to hold off the 2018 USAB Class D National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers as U of N won 2-0. The final was the longest recorded game of the weekend. It took 2 18-minute halves, 1 5-minute Sudden Death OT, and an 11-player Shoot Out to decide the Lower Bracket championship! Brooms of Steel came out on top 1-0.
