I'm currently in talks with Dave St. Aubin trying to get a skills contest scheduled at Internationals in March. The thought behind organizing this is to showcase the talents in the broomball community and recognize them while generating more attention and energy to the sport.

As it stands, there would be three events: Hardest Shot, 20 Yard Sprint, and 5 Shot showcasing strength, speed and accuracy respectively. The cost per event will be $5 (covers ice time and equipment expenses) and participants will be allowed unlimited event attempts as time allows. Winners will be named 2019 champion for each event, results will be posted on usabroomball.com and broomballcentral.com.

  • Hardest Shot - Three shots into the net from 7 yards, fastest shot in miles per hour will be recorded (Fastest shot wins)
  • 20 Yard Sprint - Pretty straight-forward (Fastest time wins)
  • 5 Shot - Participant required to shoot five balls into the goal, balls will be placed in a semicircle, see attached image (Fastest time wins)

Internationals is exactly two months away, but for this to be a reality, it will need momentum. If you are interested or would like to see this happen, please comment. The contingent piece is Dave giving 60-90 minutes to make this happen, if there's huge interest it may be more likely. Let's do this!

How about adding cones in with the 20 yard sprint to make it more of a skills event vs just straight speed.  Weave the ball through 3 or 4 cones for 20 yards.

Scott,

I'd still like to keep the 20 Yard Sprint, but I think adding more of a ball handling event is a great idea. There is a bit of room left on the ice for one more skill competition. Cones are tricky, they slide around and get knocked over easily maybe hockey pucks instead? And maybe rather than 3-4 cones/pucks there could be 20 or so on either side of a center running line and it's an out and back. Check out the attached pic. Green = body path, Orange and Red = Ball path.

I think a skills competition would be a great idea. I think there could be a crowd for that if promoted properly. I'd do it just to see what my shots are clocking in at...

Still thinking on this and came up with another potential skill that could be incorporated. The flip. Perhaps having an obstruction (like a net for example) a few feet away, in front of the player and have various 5gal buckets or garbage cans as targets to hit?

Update on this, obviously it didn't happen at Internationals, but the idea hasn't died. I actually called around and tried to get ice time in Fargo during nationals, everything was booked... I'm still hoping to make this happen, but will likely need to host my own tourney date TBD. My current thought is to do a 4 team Iron Man in which all participants get admission to a couple events (participants could buy more attempts as time permits) AND an option for outsiders to participate only in the skills comp.

Schreiber, I like the obstruction idea, that could likely be incorporated in the ball handling event.
